Women: A Dichotomy

Women face the unique challenge of choosing between motherhood and their careers. Some find a way to balance both but at some point, choices must be made. Desiree DeLong is a successful nurse at Duke Hospitals. She attended Penland School of Crafts in the mountains of North Carolina where she learned metalsmithing to become a jeweler. E.L. Roberts is a wife and mother of two in Chapel Hill, North Carolina with hopes of one day perusing a law degree.

Roberts and DeLong exemplify the challenge of choice that all women face. It is a universal choice that is not made without sacrifice.

This is my second long-term multimedia piece (February-May 2011).

With her husband, Dyan Austin cares for her elderly parents, Thomas and Lila Moss, in her own home. Their love story was altered with the introduction of Dementia, Parkinson’s and an amputation. This is my first long-term multimedia piece (October-December 2010).

I’ve been wrestling my final project for one of my photo classes, and after four stories fell through I met a wonderful family who have let me into their lives. Joyce is a hardworking single mother of four and pregnant with number five. Stay tuned for the final product!

Bill and Shirley Young, owners of Young’s Mountain Music, have preserved local culture for over 16 years by providing a space for performance, dance and community in the mountains of North Carolina. This is my first time using video to create a multimedia piece, which I shot and produced in five days during the Carolina Photojournalism Workshop (May 2010).
